It is my privilege and pleasure to help put together In Stride, your club's newsletter. Here are a few of the articles that made In Stride a success:

Starts April 9, 2013
We had such a good response with our previous "Walkers to Runners" programs. So we are delighted to bring you the Spring "Walkers to Runners" program.
“Hi Dad”
By Ed Crum
On February 17th, 2013 I ran the Austin Marathon. Three hours and 23 minutes was a respectable time for me, even though I trained to run a faster time. I...

Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway
- 20 Miles of Awesome
by Troy Surritt, Club President
20 miles of awesome! And yes, we are thinking about making this one of our periodic long run locations - in addition to Trinity Trails in Fort Worth and White Rock Lake in Dallas. Let me know what you think.

by Kasi Clay
Growing up, I was considered 'chubby'. Despite my size, I was never concerned with my weight or diet because I was very active. As I got older, I became less active.
Jiggle Butt Run
by Carolyn Surritt
The Jiggle Butt Run is a 5k run for women only. Several of the Arlington Striders wanted to run the race. Andrea, Tawanie, Kasi, Felecia, Joanna, Nancy and I all signed for.

Rules of the Road and Trails
By Troy Surritt
Run facing traffic if running on the roads. This way if they don't see you, at least you can see them and move out of the way in time if needed. If running on the sidewalk or multi-use trails, travel on the right and pass on the left.

Cold Weather Apparel
By Troy Surritt
If you dress warm at the start of your run, you will, most likely, be over heated at the end of your run. When running in cold weather always remember one word - layers. The layers of clothing will keep you warm by trapping heat against your body.
Volunteer - No Limits
By Phillip Jackson
Over the years I have the pleasure of running in many races. I love running; so much so that, I like giving back to the race community which has given so much to me. Being a volunteer at a race is actually very rewarding and fun, too.
By Nancy Marak
After completing the Arlington Striders "Walk to Run" program in March, I began rapidly increasing my mileage and helping coach another Walk to Run program. My only goal when I joined the Striders Walk to Run program was to run a 5K comfortably.
By Jessica Long
I first heard about the Tough Mudder in 2011 when my college roommate asked if I wanted to sign up. I decided against it. After all, I was in the middle of training for the White Rock Marathon. The last thing I needed was an injury, and then all my training would be for nothing.

Team In Training Press Release
by Troy Surritt
As Club President, normally, I do not advertise for our club's competitor. However, this is an exception due to the fact that Team In Training is a great club, as we are. You can join Team In Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and still run and train with both clubs.

Can Compression Socks Make You Run Faster?
by Marybeth Crane, MS, DPM, FACFAS., CWS
Podiatrists have been prescribing compression socks for years to treat things like chronic edema, lymphedema, varicose veins, and to prevent deep venous thrombosis; but recently they have started showing up on perfectly healthy runners. Yes, sometimes compression socks are used to treat shin splints, but do they make you faster? Can you run longer in compression socks? Many runners and triathletes swear by wearing compression they feel faster and recover better. Do they really work? Is there any scientific evidence that they really work? Or is this just more running lore?

Boston Marathon By Phillip Dow
This year the Boston Marathon was one of the hottest on record; and the results from the race showed. I know mine did! When planning my build up to the race I was looking for a 3:15-3:20 overall time thanks to Ed Crum who told me I should really try and set a Boston PR this year. Maybe if better conditions allowed; but it was not to be. With a time of 3:39 and my Finisher Medal in hand I was one happy marathoner.

Walker to Runner Training Program
by Carolyn Surritt
This training class is full: So if you missed this class/program don't worry there will be another one. Just check our website for additional information and updates!
This is a free spring training program/classes and is open to the public. It is organized by the Running Club to ready walkers to become runners and help returning runners get back on their feet.
This transition happens over an 8 week program where we take walkers and returning runners and bring them slowly up to the 5K or 3-mile distance. At the end of the program we will attend one of the area 5K races.

Clearing Up the Ice Versus Heat Mystery
Ice versus heat? This is a common question a lot of athletes, coming into my Grapevine, Texas office, ask. Most understand that ice immediately after injury is very important. The questions usually revolve around when to use heat. There are some basic guidelines that every athlete can use to reduce confusion.

Knee Woes From Running: Iliotibial Band Syndrome
I had a great question this weekend at a running forum in Grapevine. One of the runners had lateral knee pain that came and went with no obvious cause. She thought she had ITB (iliotibial band) syndrome (sounded like symptoms her friend told her about) but she had been doing stretching and icing with no avail. What else could she do? Is it possibly from her shoes? Is rest enough? Let's talk about ITB syndrome.

Cowtown 50K - OMG
That's 31 Miles
By Blanca Gonzales
I went on this run with 3 goals. Main goal was to finish. The second was to finish without my bad leg giving up. Last goal was to do the run without looking at my watch.
Country Road PR
By Nancy Marak
I grew up with severe asthma, being excused from running activities throughout my childhood; never did I imagine from all running I could run over 3 miles.
A Groovy Beginner
By Veronica Mayer
I consider myself as a beginner when it comes to running. I have never ran a race; well not completely anyway. Once I am able to run a half-marathon without stopping, I will stop calling myself a 'beginner'.

Perseverance
By Doug Mayfield
My first run with the Striders had me grouped with some guys... little did I know they were doing 6 miles of hills! Needless to say, I had to walk some of it and was cooked by the end of the run... did I mention this was also in late June! Well, that little running bug that everyone else possessed jumped on me and I went back for more...
Kelly's First Marathon

Published on Jan 1, 2012.
My running career started out in March of 2010. The goal was to lose weight I had put on during my pregnancy and kept for nearly 2 years afterwards. I didn't join the group right away. I was barely able to run a mile without having to stop and walk. So I worked my way up to a 5k and in May started running with The Arlington Striders. I really did not have a distance goal in mind. The one thing I did have in mind was finding other runners to motivate and keep me running on a regular basis.

December 4, 2011 was my third time to run the White Rock Marathon. I can honestly say I trained hard for it and although the conditions were not ideal, I enjoyed the run immensely. Coach Troy gave me a training plan to follow. His plan focused on running in a different way than previously with track, hills, long runs, easy and rest days.

I ran the Jog'r Egg Nog'r 5K in Dallas on December 17th and finally ran under 20 minutes. OMG It was about time. My 1st mile was under 6 minutes so I thought the mile markers were off until I approached mile 2. I thought "wow this is going to be a great day". Anyway my pace ended up being 6:18 per mile. That's a PR since my college track days. I wish I could run what I was running in college. Oh well, I'm too old.

I just began running this year. I have been doing it in baby steps. In January I ran a 5K. It took me 41 minutes. My next run was in October and I ran a 5K in 35 minutes. I was so very excited and proud of myself! I still didn't consider myself a "runner" so I still haven't been to any of The Arlington Striders group runs. Even so, I follow all the messages from club members. I wish I could run with the REAL runners.

Interlochen Christmas Lights Run
By David Smith
Usually a quiet part of town which draws very little attention, Arlington's Interlochen neighborhood draws a huge crowd every year in December. It is estimated, by news stories, that nearly 40,000 people drive through this unique residential area in order to view Christmas lights. The houses were decked to the halls with so many bright lights and displays that they lit up the night.
